UX/UI Design for an AI Legal Assistant

Legal work runs on precision and time — two things that don't mix well with clunky internal tools. Emmi is an AI assistant built specifically for legal professionals: a conversational interface that handles client onboarding, risk assessments, document generation, and practice-area guidance through a single chat window.

The design challenge was making an AI feel like a reliable colleague rather than a search engine. Legal professionals work with sensitive, high-stakes information — the interface needed to communicate competence and clarity from the first interaction, without the clinical coldness most enterprise tools default to.

The home screen organizes the assistant's capabilities into clearly labeled practice areas: Onboarding, Intellectual Property, Bankruptcy, Employment, Civil Litigation, Real Estate. Users start with a category rather than a blank prompt — which reduces friction and surfaces the right context immediately.

The conversation interface is where the real work happens. Emmi guides users through structured workflows — asking one question at a time, confirming actions with visible checkmarks, and surfacing downloadable documents and Clio integrations directly inside the chat. Nothing requires leaving the conversation to complete a task.

The visual language is deliberately restrained. A warm off-white base, muted pastels for category icons, and a hand-lettered wordmark give the product personality without undermining the professional register. Clean typography and generous spacing keep the interface readable during long working sessions.
The result is an AI tool that fits naturally into a legal workflow — structured enough to be trusted, approachable enough to be used daily.
