Mascot Design for an AI Mental Health App

Volo Health is a pocket therapist — an AI-powered mental health platform where users check in daily, track emotional states, access guided meditations, and hold real conversations with an AI that listens, responds, and follows up. We designed the full app UX/UI alongside the brand identity. But the piece that ties the product's emotional register together is V — the mascot at the heart of the AI chat experience.

The brief for the mascot was specific: gentle, empathetic, gender-neutral, and versatile enough to work across different audiences without reading as designed for any one of them. It needed to live primarily inside the AI chat interface, but scale across the full app — onboarding, sessions, marketing materials, and any future touchpoints.

The design answer was a soft, rounded form in the brand's teal tones — deliberately simple, deliberately ambiguous. No sharp edges, no defining features that would anchor V to a demographic. The large expressive eyes do all the emotional work: a slight frown communicates concern, a lifted brow signals curiosity, a wide gaze reads as attentive presence. The small tuft on top adds just enough personality to make V feel like a character rather than an icon.

What makes V work in a mental health context is restraint. The character doesn't perform happiness or push positivity — it simply looks like it's listening. That quality is exactly what users need to see at the start of a session, when they're about to share something difficult.

The color palette shifts with context: a deeper teal in active session screens, a softer periwinkle blue in lighter or ambient moments. V appears across backgrounds — skies, landscapes, illustrated scenes — and reads clearly in every one. The form is simple enough to animate naturally, which makes the character feel alive inside a conversation without requiring complex motion.

V is now the face of Volo Health's AI: the first thing a user sees when they open a session, and the visual anchor that makes a clinical product feel like something you'd actually want to talk to.
